Joseph P. Fisher
DCRR Club Connection
Along with his wife Kelly, Joe joined DC Road Runners in the late fall of 2010, a few years after completing his graduate coursework at The George Washington University. Since that time, he has achieved three Boston Marathon qualifying times. From 2016-2023, Joe was the Communications Director for Coach Kiprunning, Wilson Komen’s coaching business.
Joe has been a race director for the National Capital 20 Miler since 2017, and he is an RRCA-certified running coach. Late in the summer of 2024, Joe joined the DC Road Runners Board of Directors as the Director for Training Programs.
Other DC Connections
Joe currently works as the Executive Director of the Academic Resource Center at Georgetown University. In his spare time, he works as a DIY web developer, and he intends to take up the drums once again if his tinnitus allows him to do so.
Cartilage Connections
In 2018, after roughly six years of nondescript right ankle pain, Joe was diagnosed with a talar dome osteochondral defect, which required a significant surgical procedure. In late 2021, he required a second debridement surgery to correct the malformed cartilage implant that he received and to relieve pressure from a resulting anterior ankle impingement.
Subsequently, in 2023, Joe underwent two hip surgeries to repair labral tears (and bone impingements) in each hip. Joe’s hip pain overlapped with his ankle pain throughout the 2010s, but it was also nondescript and did not become chronic and disruptive until the early 2020s.
Given all of this, it is evident that all of Joe’s competitive long distance training as an adult has taken place with a constellation of various, often painful joint dysfunctions. As he moves into his late 40s, Joe is attempting to return to long distance running at a high level. He welcomes the opportunity to speak with other runners who have managed similar injuries.
